Sounds like a row/source query with a variable:

Yes, that's what I want to use.

My problem is when I am nesting queries in sub columns i "lose" the original line element, which makes it so I cannot use it for filtering (in where clauses) or such. Being able to "call back" to the line element in any query I am using to generate columns would solve most of my problems - but if I had the ability to ask for "anything" in this space, I would want to be able to use the "lne element" of any column/sub column which is applicable in context (i.e. not looking "to the side" of the nested query space I was working with but only "up" in the nested query hierarchy).

The explanation gets a bit convoluted, but basically, if you nest queries as sub columns, it would be helpful to be able to recontextualise the results through filtering and/or further querying.

Can you use Smart Columns instead of sub-columns? In the Smart Column you have access to the row element.

Maybe it's my lack of ability with smart columns (they are a bit different in logics from the paradigm used by query/matrix), but I don't know how to make a smart column return elements (rather than text, sums, pick lists and so on, applied to the element).

What I need is the ability to use nested queries for columns in a matrix and being able to call back to the line element (or preferably to be able to call back to any "line" within the nested query stack), to filter out results which are elements. Not saying it cannot be done - just saying I don't know how to do it and it would be a good idea to expose the line element as an option to use in variables when you are working with matrices.
