Any themes you add to your repository are called 'universal themes'. Universal themes support one or more element types. Element types define the fields your elements can have.
Themes correspond to element hierarchies in the Explorer Bar. If a theme has more than one element type, you can choose which element types to base the new element on when you create them. For example, if your 'Projects' theme has two element types: 'Internal' and 'External,' then you can choose between these types when creating a new element.
Note: Repository Manager includes some default themes. These include 'Processes', 'Objects', 'Roles', and 'Users'. These themes are not universal themes, so you cannot add more element types to them.
